Ayurveda

Traditional Wisdom. Personalised Care.

Ayurveda describes a person before it describes a complaint. Everything that follows — the prescription, the therapy, the diet — is built from that description.

The framework

Constitution, not category

Ayurveda is usually met through its treatments — the oils, the poultices, the steady stream of Shirodhara. But the treatments are the last step. What comes first is a way of describing a person.

Classical Ayurveda reads the material world through five elements, which combine into three functional principles — the doshas. Everyone has all three; the proportion differs from person to person. That proportion, prakriti, is understood to settle early and remain a reference point for life. What changes is vikriti: the present state, and how far it has drifted.

This is why an Ayurvedic practice does not work from a menu. Two people arriving with the same complaint may be given different preparations, different therapies and different diets — because the framework is describing them, not the complaint.

Areas of practice

What the units treat

Reproduced from the areas of practice the units themselves publish. These describe what is treated — not an expected outcome, which is decided at consultation.

  • Arthritis and joint disorders (Amavata, Vatarakta, gout)
  • Disc-related back, neck and knee pain
  • Paralysis and nerve-related conditions
  • Psoriasis and eczema
  • Diabetes and lifestyle conditions
  • Allergy and asthma
  • Post-natal care
  • Weight reduction
Rhythm

Why Kerala, and why the monsoon

Treatment in Kerala has a calendar as well as a method.

Karkidakam

Mid-July to mid-August

The Malayalam month across the heaviest of the monsoon, traditionally the season for treatment in Kerala — humid, cool, and a slower month in the agricultural calendar.

Dinacharya

The daily order

The classical texts give considerable attention to the ordering of a day: when to rise, when to eat, when the principal meal should fall, how to move.

Ritucharya

The seasonal order

The same ordering, adjusted across the seasons. Much of what a residential programme does is hold a person inside that rhythm long enough for it to take.
