Where Aptaveda began

MM Ayurveda is where Aptaveda began — a clinic on the Main Road at Pilakkool, Thalassery, opened by Dr. Shavas MM in 2018 after his MD and his years of practice in Oman.

Treatment here begins with consultation rather than a catalogue. The therapies that follow — Panchakarma, Pizhichil, Dhara, Kizhi and the rest of the Kerala repertoire — are selected for the individual, their constitution and the stage of their condition.

The clinic has always given particular attention to ortho-neuro care — back, knee and joint pain and nerve-related conditions — with in-patient treatment available. Behind it is a family tradition of Ayurveda reaching back through Dr. Shavas's father, Dr. Mohamed M, and grandfather, Hasan Vaidyar.

Consultation before prescription

Ayurveda describes a person before it describes a complaint. The therapies that follow are chosen for the individual, their constitution and the stage of their condition — not picked from a list.

Areas of practice listed by the clinic

  • Arthritis and joint disorders (Amavata, Vatarakta, gout)
  • Disc-related back, neck and knee pain
  • Paralysis and nerve-related conditions
  • Psoriasis and eczema
  • Diabetes and lifestyle conditions
  • Allergy and asthma
  • Post-natal care
  • Weight reduction

These are the conditions the clinic lists among its areas of practice. They describe what is treated here, not an expected outcome — that is decided at consultation.

Ortho-neuro rehabilitation

Former Chief Physician, Al Bahja Indian Ayurvedic Clinic, Sur, Oman

Dr. Shavas MM earned his BAMS from Coimbatore Ayurveda College in 2008 and went on to an MD in Dravyaguna at ALN Rao Memorial Ayurveda Medical College, Koppa. He then spent around two and a half years in the Sultanate of Oman as Chief Physician of Al Bahja Indian Ayurvedic Clinic in Sur, broadening his practice with international patients. Back in Kerala, he founded MM Ayurveda Clinic in 2018 as a centre for ortho-neuro rehabilitation, pairing classical Ayurvedic treatment with focused orthopaedic and neurological care. Many patients have come to him with back pain, knee pain and other musculoskeletal or neurological conditions, among them people who had been advised surgery, and many have found lasting relief and moved more freely through Ayurvedic rehabilitation and pain management. In 2024 he opened Aptaveda Ayurveda Hospital in Kolassery, offering a broad range of treatments with particular strength in postnatal care and ortho-neuro rehabilitation. Aptaveda has since grown into retreat and wellness care: a branch in association with Villa De 1945 in Mahe, and the Aptaveda Ayurveda Retreat & Wellness Centre at 1866, the Heritage Judge Bungalow in Melur, Thalassery, where guests combine a heritage staycation with authentic Ayurvedic treatment and wellness programmes.

Questions

Before you come

How long does a course of treatment take?

Duration depends entirely on the condition and is decided at consultation. Panchakarma in particular is prescribed as a course rather than a single session.
